It hit me the other day that I just have one year left in Iowa City ... and how fast that year is going to go.
For a true-blooded Cyclone, I've grown to love this town with its big city feel yet down-home friendliness. I love the downtown boutiques and bars, the summer film and music festivals, and the activist-minded atmosphere. I love the Free Medical Clinic, Hancher plays and concerts, and the fact that I've been able to own my own home. I love the parks and the big-name speakers that come to campus, the Red Avocado, Hamburg Inn, and Wig and Pen. I love that the Amana Colonies and Kalona are closeby and that my drive to the airport takes 15 minutes. And I particularly love the Old Capitol.
I love the memories of this place, my home for what will be four years, and I love the people attached to those memories. I know I could stay for residency, but I also know I have a wanderlust I must answer to and that I would always wonder what I missed out in the world if I chose to stay. So, come next May, my van will be packed and bound west, east, north, or south.
But, in the meantime, please come by for a visit --- I'll take you out for homemade ice cream at Whitey's. We'll catch a show at the Englert. We'll picnic in City Park. I'll show you all around this place that I love.
