There is no state fair like the Iowa State Fair --- plain and simple. I landed at the Des Moines airport mid-afternoon yesterday and headed straight there. I go to the same places every year --- the 4-H building, the beef tent, the Varied Industries building, the Agriculture Building, the Dairy Barn, and the Cultural Center --- but it just isn't summer to me unless I visit the fair. I was very fortunate to see my entire family, my childhood friends Emily and Susie, my friend Julie from medical school, several old 4-H staff friends, and my photo on display. And not to mention the food!!! A hot beef sundae, a chocolate chip cookie dough shake, freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies, a burrito, macaroni-and-cheese bits, tator ribbon fries, honey lemonade, a raspberry slush ... and I probably missed a thing or two! Yum, yum, yum --- the diet starts tomorrow, as well as my psychiatry rotation. Scary! It will be an interesting day!

Think it is kind of neat that your guys, like Salmon, come back to your stomping ground every summer. Everyone will be 50 years old and will still be doing the same. We hope to join you guys one of these years.
