My friend Toby and I spent a warm December evening this past Saturday down at Mount Vernon, seeing George Washington's home and estate by candlelight. Exceptionally well orchestrated, we were led by costumed guides through all floors of the mansion (even the third floor that is only open to the public during this month) and even had the chance to meet "Martha" herself! The renowned Ladies of Mount Vernon hosted carolers and gave out apple cider and ginger cookies. The new museum was not open, and I look forward to visiting again soon. At the entrance to the education center, a large George head follows you with his eyes no matter where you roam in the lobby. It's quite bizarre, and in all honesty - a little spooky.

Friday night I heard Handel's Messiah performed at the National Cathedral. Wow - it was a feat to sit through the three-hour performance, but I cannot imagine the thrill of actually performing the work itself. Absolutely impressive! My favorite portion was also the most familiar, the Hallelujah chorus where the hundreds of us in the audience stood at the same time.
I'm also posting a picture of my co-workers ... we are the 'policy chicks', if you will! We had so much fun celebrating a friend's birthday last week, we have decided to get together after hours every two weeks ... essential 'policy wonks-in-training' events!
