My friend Toby works at the Japanese embassy on Massachusetts Avenue, and earlier this week I joined him for lunch at the nearby Italian embassy. Nothing like "authentic" penne pasta being served with an Italian accent! Afterward, we toured President Wilson's retirement home with many authentic furnishings and medical paraphernalia he used following his stroke in the latter portion of his second term in office. I was not aware that he is the only president who worked as a professor prior to taking office (Wilson had a Ph.D. in political science and taught at Princeton.) and is one of only three presidents to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in establishing the League of Nations, the forerunner to the United Nations. Apparently, the home is not particularly well-traveled, as we received our own personal tour!

Dining with the Italians ... and President Wilson
