Tragedy has hit Des Moines. No, I'm not talking about wounded soldiers returning from Iraq, floods of monstrous proportions, or destructive tornadoes. There have not been any recent school shootings, gang violence, or bioterrorism attacks. And I'm not referring to an area-wide shortage of I-Touch I-pods causing consumer fury.
I'm talking about the Anderson Erickson plastic dairy calf mascot.
Purportedly, within recent weeks an anonymous, hit-and-run driver careened off University Drive on the east side of Des Moines and struck down the calf standing for thirty-plus years next to his mama. As you can well imagine, this made headlines and the evening news around here. The little one has yet to be replaced, but several crosses and plastic flowers stand where he once did, and his mother's front leg is wrapped in a yellow "cast" that the public has begun to sign.
Proud to report from Central Iowa ... and many thanks to Robin and Nancy for their "news alert"!
