Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of these things and still be calm in your heart.

Happy Anniversary To Me ... and My $55,000 Piece of Paper

So, today marks exactly one year since I've started keeping this blog. Hard to believe. My dad always says that time goes faster as you get older. Humpf. I tend to agree these days. So much can happen in one year's time --- moves, degrees, weddings, travels, births, and most recently a death --- that it's fun to have an excuse to look back through the months. Thanks for all of those who visit, read, and comment, which I know can be painful on some of the longer entries!

I am now the owner of the most expensive piece of paper I have to date --- after several weeks of waiting, my $55,000 George Washington University MPH diploma arrived in the mail. I'm terribly afraid I will spill something on it. These diplomas are always so stuffy-sounding. And I quote, "The George Washington University Washington, District of Columbia, to all persons who read these letters, Greeting: Be it known that the President, Faculty, and Trustees, by virtue of the authority granted by The United States of America, have conferred upon Lauren Saboe Hughes the degree of Master of Public Health, together with all the honors, rights, privileges, and responsibilities thereunto appertaining." I believe they should include an addendum about making sure to "honor the responsibility" of paying all those loans back! Education is a true blessing, no matter the cost. I was thinking the other day that it's pretty remarkable that two of my three closest childhood friends have their Master's degrees, and the third is in the process of applying for a Master's program. My sisters as well have talked about what interests them for their advanced degrees. Not bad for a bunch of gals from near Searsboro, IA!

In other news, I have now left Des Moines. My rotation there was a fantastic one. I will be starting in Storm Lake for family medicine for four weeks starting in a week-and-a-half. And in a matter of a few hours, I will be on a plane bound east for DC! I will be attending the American Public Health Association conference there for the next four days, catching up with friends, and just taking time to enjoy the city I love.

Congrats on the diploma!

I used to live in Storm Lake. Don't worry: the pork processing smell comes and goes. The lake is actually quite cute, and some awesome cultural events come to Buena Vista University, so check that out.

Also, try some Honey Kissed Pizza. The crusts are brushed with honey before baking, and Randy (the owner) is really nice. (They deliver. 712-732-2222)Good luck and travel safely.
