Nothing too new to report this week --- I am in the midst of finals and scurrying like mad to get papers written. It is very refreshing, in a way, to pull an all-nighter (as I had to on Sunday night) to write and analyze health policy, as opposed to cramming a list of anti-hypertensive medications for a pharmacology exam. This year in Washington, if anything, has informed me yet again that I love being a big picture thinker and considering the social determinants of one's health status or access to health care services, as opposed to researching to the minute detail how drugs interact with the body's receptors. Don't get me wrong; we need people on both ends of the spectrum, but I feel exceedingly fortunate to have found my calling and am constantly redefining my niche (and will be throughout the rest of my career ...).
Speaking of medicine and public health ... BODIES! My friend Beth and I visited the traveling Bodies exhibit in Arlington Friday night, and if I could have taken pictures, I would have taken thousands! Although I didn't learn a whole lot, per se (It was a great anatomy refresher!), it was insightful to see how artfully the curators displayed the preserved bodies and organs and how they chose to educate the public. My favorite display, bar none, was the entire human body dissolved to reveal nothing but blood vessels. Oh, and the entire body in skin (just skin!) was also fairly impressive --- something you don't see everyday. It was the best $26.50 I've spent in a long time!
