I returned this past Monday from a five-day trip to sunny Miami. I was more than ready to escape the 'brutal' winter of D.C. and head south for the American College of Preventive Medicine's annual meeting. I had fun meeting the other medical students and physicians in the field. It was a welcome change to walk along the ocean in flip flops and no coat!
However, I was happy I had the chance to meet up with my dear friend Emily --- one of the three women who has known me for as long as I can remember! We decided to spend Sunday driving around southern Florida in her black jeep and ventured in to the Everglades. We stopped for incredible milk shakes at the "Robert is Here" fruit stand before AND after leaving the national park --- you can't beat key lime and cantaloupe shakes! We went hiking along a great trail for wildlife and spotted several anhinga birds and blue and white herons, a gar (a type of fish), and 27 - count 'em! - 27 alligators! I was within five feet of one sunning himself with his jaws wide open. It rained intermittently on us while we were walking, and I got a good chuckle out of a group of nuns huddled beneath an umbrella ... ! A great destination, the open road, and a best friend --- what more does a woman need?!?
