Peace. It does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. It means to be in the midst of these things and still be calm in your heart.

How many 4-Hers does it take to fly a kite?

For my birthday, Jeff bought me my very own shark kite! Compared to all the other hundreds of kites being flown by kids and families over the entire Mall as part of the Smithsonian National Kite Festival, getting my shark to fly was easier said than done, but with fellow 4-H alums Jeff and Toby, I was in good hands with some help!

Here we are trying to get the kite assembled and the string attached. Since the three of us collectively have done many 'projects' over the years, we bypassed the printed instruction sheet altogether ...

Here's a picture of the NASA shuttle kite (complete with burner!) that hit me in the head while I was trying to fly my own shark! Too bad the collision wasn't caught on camera ...

My first couple of attempts were ill-fated --- not enough wind!!!

Finally, my shark flew --- but that was Jeff's luck!

Eventually, I got my own air stream and took off running across an open patch of grass on the Mall, and I got the kite into the air ... it was all fun and games until an official warned me, "Ma'am, you can't fly your kite here!" Apparently, they were setting up for some event, and I had entered a 'no-fly' zone!

What a great way to spend an afternoon --- here are some of the other kites!
